Joint Venture Partners of Bear Clan Strategy

Ek’edia Services

Bear Clan Strategy is proud to enter into a joint venture with Ek’edia Services, owned by Peter Crookedhand of the Yellowknives Dene First Nation.

Ek’edia Services and Bear Clan Strategy provide Indigenous labour market services and engagement support to companies working or bidding on contracts at the Giant Mine Remediation Project. The objective is to create jobs for YKDFN members and businesses and other Indigenous nations directly impacted.

Ek’edia Services is based in Dettah, Yellowknives Dene First Nation. Peter was born and raised in Dettah.

Ek’edia Services provides wildlife and environmental monitoring services at Giant Mine and for other entities, such as Det’on Cho Environmental. Peter has a strong connection to the land and grew up hunting, trapping and gathering. Peter’s deep knowledge of the land was passed along to him by his Dad, whose nickname was Ek’edia, meaning “Number Eight.” Peter’s wife, Sue Crookedhand, plays a significant role at Ek’edia where she manages the operations and marketing for Ek’edia Services.

Ek’edia Services won the 2023 Business of the Year award from the Akaitcho Business Development Corporation.

Peter is a former Councillor of the Yellowknives Dene First Nation.

Dr. Ken Coates

Bear Clan Strategy is very pleased to enter into a joint venture with Dr. Ken Coates on the Faro mine remediation project in the Yukon.

We provide Indigenous labour market participation and engagement support to companies working or hoping to win contracts at Faro. The goal is to ensure that First Nations and other Indigenous groups impacted by Faro will secure employment and training on the Faro mine remediation project.

Ken Coates is President of Coates Holroyd Consulting, Distinguished Professor Emeritus from the University of Saskatchewan and Director of the Indigenous Program at the Macdonald-
Laurier Institute.

He was formerly the Chair of the Indigenous Governance Program at Yukon University. He is also the Chair of the Yukon Arctic Security Advisory Council. Ken resides in Whitehorse, Yukon.

Ken has worked at universities across Canada and internationally. He has worked extensively with community colleges and polytechnic institutions and has been heavily involved with Indigenous engagement in the natural resource sector. Through his work with the Macdonald-Laurier
Institute, Ken has emerged as one of the foremost Canadian commentators on Indigenous engagement in the economy, with a strong focus on resource and infrastructure development.

Ken has published close to 50 books, mostly on northern and Indigenous topics. His co-authored book Arctic Front: Defending Canada in the Far North, won the Donner Prize as the best Canadian book on public policy.
